There is nowhere quite like Venice. A floating city comprising 118 islands, linked by a network of canals and bridges, with the iconic Grand Canal at its heart. However, it’s not only a remarkable feat of engineering, but also one of the most beautiful cities in the world. From the fairytale grandeur of Piazza San Marco to the fading beauty of the back streets, there are photographic opportunities literally around every corner. Venice has a reputation for romance and mystery and we will make sure that you capture all the ambience the city has to offer, taking in not just the well-known viewpoints but also introducing you to some of the lesser-known but equally atmospheric corners.
Staying for four nights in the Hotel Saturnia & International, a charming four-star hotel housed in a historic palazzo and strategically located a few minutes' walk from the key viewpoints of Piazza San Marco and the Ponte dell’Accademia, we will start early to avoid the crowds and capture the dawn light and continue through till the evening blue hour, when Venice is at its romantic best. Venice is a compact city, so we will travel mostly on foot; the city is flat and the walking isn't strenuous but we will cover several kilometres every day and we will of course, be crossing numerous bridges. There will also be half-day visit to the island of Burano (included in the cost of the workshop) - famous for its colourful houses and intricate hand-made lace.
December is the perfect time to visit Venice, which can get crowded at other times of year. The winter weather can be less predictable, but Venice looks stunning in any conditions - rain or shine - and if there is fog or ‘acqua alta’, it only adds to the mood.
Your tutors for this workshop are Jeremy Walker and Mark Bauer, two of the UK’s leading landscape photographers. Mark was a frequent visitor to Venice when he lived in the north of Italy and Jeremy also has an excellent knowledge of the photographic opportunities the city has to offer. Between them they will make sure you are always well positioned for photography...
The group size is limited to just 8 on this tour, to help ensure that viewpoints don’t get too crowded and also guarentee plenty of individual tuition. Although it will not be possible for us to run formal tutorials on this trip, there will be plenty of opportunity for informal image reviews and processing tips and tricks over a drink or two in the evenings.
*Please note that flights are not included in the cost of this workshop, but after booking, we will contact you with a details of recommended flights. Assuming you are on one of these flights, your tutors will meet you at the airport. Please do not book flights until we advise you to do so.
