Explore the Jurassic Coast: Small Group Tour

The Jurassic Coast, spanning 96 miles from Old Harry Rocks in Dorset to Orcombe Point in Devon is one of the world’s great wonders. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 -  the first wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the UK.

It features 185 million years of geological history and a huge variety of landscapes, from high, precipitous cliffs, to sandy beaches, rocky coves, harbours and quaint fishing villages. There are classic geology textbook locations such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, as well as many other lesser-known, but equally spectacular viewpoints. Along its course can be found eye-catching natural features such as arches, pinnacles and sea stacks, as well as a fossil forest and a fossil ‘graveyard’. What more could the keen seascape photographer want?

For this six-day (five night) small group workshop, we will tour the Jurassic Coast from east to west, staying in 3 different bases along the way, giving us plenty of time to explore all it has to offer. With a group size of just six participants (with two tutors), not only will there be plenty of opportunity for individual attention, but we will also be able to visit locations which are not practical for larger groups to access. There will also be no need for car-sharing, as you will be able to travel to all the locations in your tutors' cars (although you will need to travel in your own car from one base to the next). The accommodation is in good quality hotels, carefully chosen for their easy access to key locations.

Late February is the perfect time to shoot the Jurassic Coast. The sun will still be rising and setting over the sea and there will be light on the coast throughout the day. There may be sunshine and showers, resulting in dramatic light for seascapes and who knows, we may even get a little early morning mist in the valleys just inland…

With such a small group, we won’t hold any formal tutorials, but instead will spend time in the evenings, reviewing the day’s shots on our laptops and giving hints and tips on how to get the best out of your files. You'll also have the opportunity to discuss aspects of planning shoots and scouting locations with your tutors. 

Your tutors for this workshop are Mark Bauer and Ross Hoddinott. Between them they have excellent local knowledge and will make sure you are always in the right place at the right time.
